Economic Impact of Travel

VTC’s annual economic impact of travel study covering 2021 was conducted directly by Tourism Economics, with the partnership of the US Travel Association.

2021 Economic Impact of Visitors across Virginia’s localities

These files contain measurements of the amount and total impact of visitor spending across all Virginia counties and independent cities.  Please only use these files for year-over-year comparisons, and not any Economic Impact data released in prior years by VTC. The historical data in these files has been revised reflecting updated methodologies and additional local input data. Comparing this data to prior reports is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Direct Visitor Spending & Impact: The below file contains measurements of direct visitor spending across all Virginia localities – with historical data back to 2016. Direct visitor spending measures the amount of expenditures spent by visitors in each locality.  If you are looking for spending, income, employment, and tax revenue generated directly by visitors by locality, please refer to this file.

Indirect and Induced Visitor Impacts: New for this year, VTC Research is now reporting indirect and induced impacts of visitor spending across all Virginia localities. Tourism Economics uses an IMPLAN input-output model to measure the expanded economic impact of travel spending as it flows through the economy.
