President's Notes

A recent international article appeared on the wire about the degradation of the landscape in Machu Picchu, Peru, due to development spawned by tourism. This and other stories like it are sure to result in great public debate and more scrutiny of our industry. We have long been proud to characterize our industry as a “clean” industry and one that preserves and enhances local culture and improvement of the quality of life of our communities. Now more than ever we must be diligent and actively involved in spurring tourism development that is responsible, that reduces negative impacts on the environment and that preserves the way of life of Virginians. National Geographic Society defines Geotourism as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. A first step in this direction is to become a Virginia Green certified business. A second step is to be involved in community planning and to support Governor Kaine’s Executive Order 69 that outlines steps for Sustainable Community Investment. And, finally, we should be leaders in this effort to ensure that Virginia’s tourism economy sustains itself for generations to come.
